Christians came into being, together with the lay apostleship. As faith was transferred to the private sphere and the modes of belief in society multiplied, ecumenical movements arose. It is important to see the start of missionary activity in this historical context. It is not merely a Christian answer to the discovery of unknown continents; it is also an answer to the changed situation in Europe itself.
